Eleanor McMahon has spent her career in senior roles in business, government and the not-for-profit sector.
Eleanor is the founder and CEO of the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, and an internationally recognized advocate for healthy, safe, connected communities.
As a former Vice President with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Eleanor understands how working together with the business community will create jobs and grow our economy.
She knows how important GO Transit is to Burlington for enhancing our quality of life, reducing gridlock, and improving our environment.
As a Vice President with the Ottawa United Way, Eleanor has delivered results to communities, invested in people, and helped youth thrive.
Eleanor is the strong determined champion Burlington needs to strengthen our job creation, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
She spent the early part of her career on Parliament Hill in a number of roles including Press Secretary in the office of the Right Honorable Jean Chrétien. She has served as Director of Public Affairs at the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women as well as Vice President at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. She then spent time as Director of Public Affairs at Petro-Canada, Vice President at United Way Ottawa, and Executive Director of Public Affairs at the Ontario Medical Association.
The tragic death of Eleanor’s husband, OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart – killed in a cycling collision in 2006 by a driver with five convictions for driving under suspension – led her life in an entirely new direction. Eleanor’s reaction to this unthinkable loss was to launch a campaign to improve road safety and enhance legislation in Ontario. In 2008 she launched the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, a provincial cycling policy and advocacy organization. She has worked full-time as its CEO since 2010. The Share the Road Cycling Coalition was created to unite cycling organizations from across Ontario and work with municipalities to make their communities more bicycle-friendly.
In 2008 Eleanor began lobbying for enhanced penalties for suspended drivers in Ontario. As a result of her advocacy, “Greg’s Law” was passed on April 22nd 2009 and became law in September 2010, making our communities safer by reducing the number of suspended drivers and repeat offenders on Ontario’s roads.
On June 12, 2014, Eleanor was elected to represent Burlington as part of the 41st Parliament of Ontario and the Government of The Honourable Kathleen Wynne. In addition, she currently serves as a Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.
